Discover the Secrets of Penrhyn Old Hall
Set in the heart of Llandudno, Penrhyn Old Hall is one of North Wales’s oldest and most atmospheric buildings. Once a Tudor mansion — and possibly the site of an 8th-century royal residence — it has witnessed centuries of faith, tragedy, and intrigue.
This ancient house, now a pub and restaurant, carries layers of history within its walls. From its early 16th-century south-west wing and hidden priest holes to its connection with religious persecution, every corner tells a story. But it’s not just history that lingers here — it’s the ghosts of those who never left.
A Legacy of Faith and Fear
During the 16th century, the Pugh family, then owners of the hall, risked everything by sheltering Catholic priests at a time when their faith was outlawed. Secret Masses were held in a chapel nearby (now in ruins), and a hidden space known as a “priest hole” still exists behind a fireplace in the Tudor Bar.
One priest, Father William Davies, and Robert Pugh famously fled to the Little Orme, where they printed Wales’s first book using a smuggled press. When captured in 1592, Davies was executed for his beliefs — hanged, drawn, and quartered at Beaumaris. His martyrdom was later recognised by the Vatican, and in 1987 he was beatified by the Pope.
Centuries later, a withered hand — said to be that of William Davies — was discovered hidden in the hall.
Hauntings and Ghostly Encounters
Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported a range of ghostly sightings over the years. Spirits said to haunt Penrhyn Old Hall include:
👻 A ghostly monk, wandering the old corridors.
👦 A mischievous boy, seen sprinkling salt across tables.
🪖 A soldier, appearing near the upper rooms.
👧 A young Pugh girl, said to have been murdered by her sisters to stop her marrying a Protestant.
Staff and guests have reported cold spots, unexplained footsteps, and the sensation of being watched — particularly around the Tudor Bar and the old chapel grounds.
